Your article reveals an astonishing level of ignorance

Your article reveals an astonishing level of ignorance regarding both Nietzche and more fundamentally, on the practice of psychotherapy. Your misunderstandings are so many in number that I hardly know where to begin my commentary. However, to save you some time, I will say unequivocally that the practice of psychotherapy, or its pursuit of "self-actualization", does NOT mandate a rejection of spirtual beliefs, ethics, morals or religious beliefs. Quite to the contrary. The purpose of therapy is simply to develop a personality that is more functional in its ability to participate in its environment. Functional simply means "successful", a meaning that is typically defined by the client, and is not imposed by a therapist. Some people want to be more successful in their spiritual lives, others want to match their behavior with scriptural instructions. The goals that people bring into therapy are as diverse as the general population. No competent therapist would impose their world view on their clients. The notion that contemporary therapy is a derivative of Nietzche's philosophy is pure fantasy. Next time you are entertaining this silly notion try having an in-depth discussion on Nietzche's philosophy or particular books with a local counselor or even Psychologist. You will be quite disappointed to discover that they are unfamiliar with his work --- this general ignorance of Philosophy in general and Nietzche in particular, absolutely eliminates the notion that therapists are consciously using elements of Nietzche in treating their patients. You are seriously overestimating the educational background of most therapists ---- they are NOT that intellectual. There are many more arguments against your thesis, but the fact that the alleged purveyors of "values" are unfamiliar with your "villan du jour" makes the assertion of teaching Nietzche to patients completely absurd. You need to rethink this, perhaps read a bit on the history of psychology . . .

Signed:

A psychologist who is familiar with Nietzche and finds his work useless in a therapeutic setting

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for the letter. I agree with you that not all therapists are as Leanne Payne, a Christian therapist said “post-modernist subjectivist.”

What I’m saying is that God created reality-material and moral- so that there is a “mandated” or objective right(good) or wrong(evil/sin). This is called the Christian world view. Therapy as taught by the authors I mentioned in the article hold that the self or parts of the “unconscious” decide what is right or wrong. For example, in the materially objective case if one drinks poison, one will get sick or die. In the morally objective case if one holds that there is no objective right or wrong only the self or parts of the self fulfilling itself, then you have Maslow as well as Adler cheerleading for pedophilia.

I agree that most people including therapist don’t realize they are using Nietzschean ideas. For example, you don’t realize you’re using Nietzschean ideas in your argument. Over and over again in the letter you are saying-in various expressions- that one should not “impose” one’s values(opinions) on other’s values(opinions). But when an objective moral good(a child’s innocence) is abused by an objective wrong(pedophilia) then one must “impose” a punishment(jail the pedophile). The question you must ask yourself is are you a subjectivist like Maslow and Adler or someone who holds that there is objective moral reality like Leanne Payne?

Fred

This article should be mandatory reading in 1st year theology as well as youth ministry or cross-cultural missionary workshops.
As a 34 year old Catholic seeking to understand objective reality and conform to it, I really enjoyed your article "Nietzschean Psychoanalysis and the Boston Catastrophe".

Keep up the great work. I look forward to reading more of your articles.

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi Fred,

That article was awesome!
As for the references to objective truth, I have a number of books on
my shelf that I will send to you later.
I have to tell you that after I read your article, it strengthened my
resolve not to be afraid of modern psychology and philosophy.

Thanks!

Dennis

Father Joseph Fessio to Replace Levada in San Francisco?

Father Joseph Fessio to Replace Levada in San Francisco?

The Vatican watch blog vaticanisti.blogspot.com/ was the first to predicted that Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco would be appointed the new Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. On May 11, the site posted:

“Our sources in Rome have confirmed that the rumors of Pope Benedict naming Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco as the new prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) are true...These same sources have mentioned the name of Joseph Fessio, SJ as a possible replacement for Levada in San Francisco.”

Most orthodox Catholics are thrilled by the possibility that Fessio could be named to head the San Francisco Diocese. But they think the possibility improbable because the new Pope would have to step on the toes of powerful Los Angeles Cardinal Mahony who just happens to be a friend and former classmate of Levada.

Many pro-life and pro-traditional family sources in the LA area say the Boston scandal is small potatoes compared to Mahony’s homosexual sex abuse scandal, which has been kept unreported by mainstream pro-gay media. The new prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Levada’s close ties to the LA Cardinal has many orthodox Catholic worried about the new Popes advisers.

Fessio who is known to have close ties to Pope Benedict must have advised the Pope about the Levada-Mahony connection. Fessio’s monthly The Catholic World Report will be must reading in the next year. It will tell us if Benedict will use Levada to get his close friends in the leadership of the American Catholic Church to return to orthodox Catholicism or if the Vatican bureaucracy is in control and will continue the status quo in the United States.

Creating a Great Catholic or Pro-life Ad

Creating a Great Catholic or Pro-life Ad

Ad Expert Wanda Loskot says 90% of the effectiveness depends on the headline. If the reader doesn’t find the title interesting he will not read the rest.

· Spend most or a lot of the time on creating an attention grabbing headline.
· Make it bold, newsworthy or if possible put an offer in the headline.
· Concentrate on your target reader. If possible name him! Headlines like "Attention Catholics of Santa Clara County" make it impossible for Catholics of Santa Clara County not to read it! (The headline of the most successful crisis pregnancy center in the USA is Considering Abortion? It’s your choice. The Women’s Center 1-800-400-4205)
· You have to come up with your own headline, but it should be something like: Considering a Catholic Gift or Book? You’ll find it at Our Lady of Peace Gift Shop. Or We’ll Special Order it for you

Lead

The headline may be created before or after you write the copy or body of your ad. The important thing is to have a purpose in writing your headline and copy. Your purpose is to get people interested in Catholic gifts or books to come to your store.

After your headline the most important part of your ad is the lead or first paragraph of your copy. Again if the first paragraph is not interesting to your target reader then you’ll lose him. The Women’s Center’s lead is:

Information and services related to:

-Family Planning &Pregnancy Alternatives
-Free Pregnancy testing
-Confidential Counseling

Your lead, which you must write, should be something like:

Free gifts to anyone who mentions this ad:

-Bring the kids we have items for them
-You will find quality Catholic items at good prices
-Service to you is our goal

You will notice in the two above leads that they are giving attention to the target reader. Use words like you, free or words that catch the attention of the reader you want coming into your store. The above lead is targeted at families that want good prices and services.

Ask for Action

Ask you reader to do something. You should ask them to call you or come to your location. The Women’s Center asks:

Call the office nearest to you...

NORTH
5116 N. Ciero Av-Chicago
(773) 283-1400

Your call to action, which again you must put together, could go:

Call us or come to our location at:

Drive to down 101 HWY until you get
to Great America BLVD (near Great America)
where you’ll see the 50 ft. statue of Our Lady or
call us at (408) 333-3333

With this ad you would want to put a picture of the 50-foot statue of Our Lady because that is a symbol of your target reader and a direction finder. When picking a graphic or photo make sure it is related to your call to action or target reader.

In addition you may want to include in your ad other languages if you carry items of more that one language. The above crisis pregnancy center advertisement uses Spanish and Polish sub ads in their main ad.

Pope Benedict vs. Sex Abusing Priests

Pope Benedict vs. Sex Abusing Priests

Pope Benedict as a cardinal fought those who wanted to protect sex abusing priest unlike VOTF. In 2003, the VOTF website (www.votf.org/Structural_Change/structural.html) said that the Structural Change Working Group (SCWG) "has been working to define what VOTF means by its Goal 3."

According to the site "The group [SCWG] has also consulted with Fr. Ladislas Orsy, S.J., in an effort to ensure that its conclusions are sound, and that none of its statements could be misunderstood. Fr. Orsy has been retained as a professional outside consultant in canon law and related matters by VOTF."

Fr. Orsy might be a questionable choice as a consultant for an organization claiming that it wants to make structural changes in the Church to end the sex-abuse scandal, at least, according to the American Cardinal Dulles and Cardinal Ratzinger of the Vatican.

The American Cardinal in a November 25, 2000 America article (www.bigbrother.net/~mugwump/Dulles/dulles_online.html) said of the priest:
"On the papal teaching office, Father Orsy renews his plea (made in several other places) that Catholics should be free to dissent from definitive teaching."

Cardina1 Ratzinger in an article published in Céide May/June 1999 (found at www.womanpriest.org/teaching/ratzing1.htm) said:

"Father Orsy assures us that the new canons were not needed because the category of definitively proposed teaching "as it appears now in official documents had not developed yet"...How the author could have come to this thesis is inexplicable."

A few paragraphs later the Cardinal wrote:

"I do not find it objective that Fr.Orsy constructs an opposition [contradiction] between Ad tuendam fidem and Vatican II. [He writes that] the Council intended no threats and penalties because the Fathers of the Council "trusted that truth will attract by its own beauty and strength" ... In fact, a large number of the bishops of the world wish today for the "sharpening" of the penal law; this is a consequence of the cases of priests guilty of paedophilia. The protection of the rights of the accused priests has become so strong that the bishops feel powerless in cases when for the sake of the faithful they should have the power to intervene."
