Is Gilligan's Island Art?
Is Gilligan's Island Art?
My 10-year-old son and I are just finished the first season DVD of Gilligan's Island. The show brings me real joy! Gilligan's Island is art in my opinion.
What our American and global culture needs are heroes as models. Steve Ditko, the artist and co-creator of Spider-Man says, "Aristotle said that art is more important than history. History tells how man did act. Art shows how man should and could act. It creates a model.
"The self-flawed and anti-hero provide the heroic label without the need to act better. A crooked cop, a flawed cop, is not a valid model of a good law enforcer," Ditko said.
"An anti-cop corrupts the legal good, and an anti-hero corrupts the moral good."

Coulson Apologizes for Rogers and Maslow
Dear Fred,
Your piece [Nietzschean Psychoanalysis] has been posted at Culture Shock one of the fastest growing news sites ... reporting on the cultural issues of our day. You mentioned William R. Coulson, who has been a contributing consultant on Culture Shock the TV show. He now apologizes for what Rogers, Maslow, and he did to the church the public schools and the courts in this country. Bill and I are pleased when someone writes of the truth in this horrific blight on our nation.Diane Alden at Newsmax and I have discussed the role of psychology in the Catholic mess and that Coulson played a major role.
Thanks,
Sincerely,
Tony DiGirolamo/Creator Executive Producer

Ray of Hope: A Vocations Director and Great Priest
Ray of Hope: A Vocations Director and Great Priest
Father Tom Daly was appointed director of vocations for the archdiocese of San Francisco. Ordained in 1987, Father Daly has been a religion teacher for ten years at Marin Catholic High School.Marin Catholic High parent Pam Birdsall is delighted by Archbishop William Levada's choice for vocations director.
Birdsall, whose children went to the Catholic school, has known Daly for eight years. "Father Daly is a great priest, a breath of fresh air and very orthodox," according to Birdsall.
Chris Lyford, the family life director for the San Francisco archdiocese, agrees with Birdsall's assessment of the new vocations director. He said he knows that Daly spends "much of his free time" helping his students and their families.
"Many priests are orthodox, but few orthodox priests I know are able to articulate the Faith to 17- and 18-year-old honors theology students in the way Father Daly does; a way that brings them into the dialogue and never loses them because of his sense of humor, and never loses sight of his true appreciation for each young person the Lord sends his way" Lyford said.
"[Father Daly] didn't just hang out with the kids as an end; his objective was to bring each one a little further along in their faith walk, if not challenge them outright to work on their own conversion. He would always be eyeing possible vocations, pondering if the faith life he saw in the young men and women he worked with would someday discover an affirmative answer to the call to priesthood or religious life."
When Birdsall was asked if she was worried that the sex abuse scandal might negatively influence the new vocations director in selecting candidates to the priesthood, she said, "I don't think so. He is very hopeful. Father will be very selective."
Lyford said that the standards that Father Daly will use in judging potential candidates to the priesthood will be to discern if the men are "faith-filled, balanced, and psychologically sound. His standards are the standards of Jesus Christ, who said: 'he who wishes to follow me must deny his very self, and pick up his cross to follow after me."
The selection process will begin when Father Daly interviews a candidate. If the vocations director is interested in the aspirant, then he can request that the aspirant go through a period of parish service with the Sulpician Fathers' discernment center at St. John the Evangelist parish in San Francisco. After this process, the candidate will again be interviewed, and Archbishop Levada will make the ultimate authorization in favor of, or against, the aspirant for the seminary.
Father Daly told me that "the type of seminarians that the archdiocese is looking for are men who love God and want to model themselves after Jesus Christ, who came to serve and not be served. They must be faithful to the Church and her teachings and the celibate life. By ordination, they must accept that they belong to God and He will give them the grace to live a celibate and chaste life. They should also be men who would be credible husbands and fathers."
The new motto of the vocations office is, "You have not chosen me. I have chosen you." The Future is HopefulThe new vocations director is confident about the future of the priesthood, despite the current clerical scandals. He said we must do our part, but his hope comes from prayer and knowing that God is in control.
"I think the future is hopeful. God is in charge. What we must do is 'beg the Harvest Master'; that is, pray first. This includes families, schools and parishes" said Daly.
"Our educational institutions must teach what the Church teaches, that is, the truths of the Faith. Priests and religious must model fidelity to Christ and His Church. In addition, bishops must act like true shepherds. When this happens, we are doing our part. But God is the one who does the calling. We can never forget that."
Lyford maintains that the new vocations director views the current scandal with the eyes of faith, which see cycles of death and resurrection in the history of the Church. Lyford said that "because of a strong faith life, Father Daly has the ability to see the difference between faith and falsehood, and thus has developed a love for the Church, especially in the lives of the saints who throughout history encountered the same cycles of spiritual dryness and revival."
Daly is hopeful for a revival, but believes because of the scandal it is "important that we truly know why a man feels he should be a priest." Among questions that the vocations director said need to be answered by a candidate are: "what is it that makes him think he has a vocation? Is he hiding from something? Who are his friends? What does he do in his free time?"
Since the vast majority of sex-abuse cases among priests are homosexual in character, Lyford and Birdsall were asked what they thought the new vocations director thought about the ordination of homosexuals.
Both Lyford and Birdsall agreed that Father Daly would follow the magisterium on the question of ordination of homosexual men. Daly concurred: "regarding homosexuals in the seminary or priesthood, the archbishop and I have talked. We are waiting for the Vatican's letter on this subject. The archdiocese will be faithful to the directives from the Holy See." Marin Catholic High theology teacher Isela Madrigal said that Father Daly is completely loyal and "devoted" to the Church. She said, "his number-one priority is the youth, the Church, and winning more souls for God. Unfortunately there aren't more Father Dalys."

Maslow, Nietzschean philosophy, and the other nuts
Fred
Your article on Maslow, Nietzschean philosophy, and the other nuts envolved in the study of the human mind, is very thought provoking. The values imparted by these psychologist I know well, due to the fact that they are taught in High school, and in college, they are taught as if they are moral absolutes by the professors.
I am happy that someone is publicly denouncing the philosophies, and theories of these characters. Keep up the good work, and is there anyway you could do a piece on "Albert Jay Knock" The man is almost forgotten, but for anyone who reads his books, they can never forget his wisdom.
Sincerely;
Trevor

Tough Jesuit at Tough School
Tough Jesuit at Tough School
Father William Stout says Mass at Our Lady of Peace Church in Santa Clara. After Mass, he is surrounded him by people of many nationalities. Father is chatting and blessing with a natural joy in Spanish, Vietnamese and other tongues. If at any time of day or night you need him, he is there with that same joyfulness.
He is a Jesuit priest whose day job has been teaching at the toughest school in Eastside San Jose - Overfelt High.
“I wanted to go to the Eastside of San Jose to help the next immigrant people.” Father said, “My family was German and Irish. My brother and I were the first to graduate from college in the family. The Mexicans were the next group of immigrants we ought to help”
The Jesuits had hoped to have a Catholic High school in the Eastside of San Jose. But in 1984 since no Catholic school was build, Father Stout proposed to the Jesuit provincial that he get hired at Overfelt to teach math to help the kids from Mexico with problems in English.
Teaching for over 16 years at the school, he knew many good students, but found that many kids saw the gangs as “heroes“. “The Overfelt riots and bad reputation give a false representation of the kids at the school. If they like you, they like you-if they don’t like you, you are in trouble.”
Father said, “I told the gangs I didn’t respect them. They carved their gang letters into my car window. I left it there so everyone could see what they were about. But, so long as kids lack parents with religion or lack parents who are home for them there will be problems.”
According to Stout the problem is students, now, come from broken homes with family problems and drugs. They don’t see direction or see the need to study. The gangs provide for the vacuum the family used to provide. They provide approval, direction, protection and a sense of belonging. These people become their family.
“The only solution is for the family to do their job - some do. They are home for their children and give them religion.“ Father said,
“ My mom was paralyzed for 10 years and my dad went out to see her everyday for 10 years. He would talk to her-you could tell she understood by her eyes looking at him. Parents must live their message! A loving couple will do more than any book. They must sacrifice their pride for each other and offer it to God.”

MAKE ONE CALL TO PROTECT MARRIAGE
Do you have moment to protect marriage as God created it?The Democrat politicians in Sacramento have a plan to push "homosexual marriage licenses" statewide in every community.
As the majority party, they know they have the power. But they're nervous and wondering if you mind them overturning the people's vote on marriage.
Of course you mind. So do millions of Californians who were angry about San Francisco's homosexual marriages" all over TV and in our faces last year. So do the 4.6 million Californians who voted for Proposition 22 a mere five years ago. We all want marriage protected and our votes respected! But the Democrat politicians won't know this unless you tell them.
With legislators returning to Sacramento today, now is the time to SPEAK OUT AND REMIND THEM that you deeply care about keeping marriage for a man and a woman, a husband and wife. There are THREE BIG REASONS why you should call your California state assemblymember TODAY (even if you have called within the last month):
1. If you've ever been to a surprise party, you know the positive "shock effect" it is on the person having the birthday. Likewise, with California state legislators walking into their offices after a month-long vacation, they need to be shocked and jolted into reality by a continuous ringing of phones. You want the legislators to ask, "What are all those calls about?" and to understand that Californians are calling in droves to oppose the Democrats' "homosexual marriage license" scheme. In your message, just say, "Oppose AB 19. Protect marriage for a man and a woman, just like we voted."
2. The Los Angeles Times has reported that the Assembly Democrats are going away on a retreat in a week or so to decide whether to push forward with AB 19. "The issue will be hashed out at a Democratic caucus retreat in early January," reported the Times on Christmas Day.
Do you understand how this is your opportunity to stop AB 19? The Democrats are nervous about 11 out of 11 states voting to protect marriage in the last election. They're wondering whether to push forward with "homosexual marriage" or hold back on AB 19 because it will hurt them politically.
They will meet to decide in a week or so. STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT. If these Democrats don't receive phone calls from you, your friends and thousands of others right now, they will get the message that AB 19 is "not a problem." Don't let them misunderstand you.
RIGHT NOW IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY to drag down this anti-voter, anti-marriage bill.3. On the radio last month, AB 19's author, homosexual Democrat Mark Leno of San Francisco, said he now has 32 co-authors, up from 24 in early December.
In another radio interview, Geoffrey Kors, head of California's homosexual lobby group, Equality California, said he believes Governor Schwarzenegger could sign AB 19 if it passes the Democrat-controlled Legislature.
THIS WOULD BE HORRIBLE -- DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN.SPEAK OUT NOW. Don't let the aggressive homosexual agenda trample you and your values without a fight. Now is your opportunity to influence your state assemblymember by calling Sacramento. With God's help and your participation, AB 19 CAN BE STOPPED if the outrage of people all over California, Democrats, Republicans and independents, is strongly felt at the State Capitol.
MAKE YOUR PHONE CALL TODAY, as your state assemblymember returns to his or her office. Call whether you are in a Democrat district or a Republican district. Every California assemblymember needs to get the message that his or her constituents are upset about the Democrats' plan to trash the people's vote on marriage. Leave a firm message to "Oppose AB 19.
Protect marriage for man and a woman, just like we voted!"It is crucial that you make your call today. Make the phones ring in Sacramento! CCF makes it easy for you to do your part.Click the following link and enter your zip code to find out who your assemblymember is so you can make your call today:

Miracle in Tsunami
Miracle in Tsunami
On December 30, 2004 the Catholic News Service reported a “miracle” at India's most popular Marian shrine during the tsunami.
Father Joseph Lionel, Thanjavur diocesan chancellor said "The Holy Mother has worked wonders despite the tragedy here.”
According to the report “ [i]n a Dec. 29 statement, basilica officials noted that about 2,000 pilgrims attending Mass were ‘miraculously saved’ when the surging waves stopped at the gates of the shrine compound.”
The Catholic News Service said Thanjavur Bishop Devadass Ambrose Mariadoss
“noted that the local bus stop on the same elevation as the basilica was farther from the beach, but it was inundated.”
"‘It was a miracle that the water did not enter the church,’ reiterated Sebastian Kannappilly, a businessman from neighboring Kerala state, who had come to Vailankanni with his wife and daughter. Although his family was at Mass and was spared, his driver perished in the disaster.”

Does "Values" have a Secret Meaning?
Does "Values" have a Secret Meaning?
Dear Dan,
Thanks again for the email. I don’t think there is a secret meaning to the word values.
- Professor Allan Bloom, translator and editor of Plato’s Republic and author of Shakespeare’s Politics said, “ The term “value, “ meaning the radical subjectivity of all belief about good and evil...was announced by Nietzsche just over a century ago when he said, “God is dead.” Good and evil now for the first time appeared as values, of which there have been a thousand and one, none rationally or objectively preferable to any other.”
- Historian Gertrude Himmelfarb said,” It was not until the present century that morality became so thoroughly relativized and subjectified that virtues ceased to be virtues and became “values”...Values as we understand that word, do not have to be virtues; they can be beliefs, opinions, attitudes, feelings, habits, conventions, preferences, prejudices, even idiosyncrasies.”
- Professor Cameron Lee at Fuller Seminary said, “ ‘family value’ itself seems infinitely plastic...the language of family values frequently betrays the very extent to which we are inextricably immersed in the thought-forms of our culture.”
That some people use words with meanings they don’t intend is common place. The question we must ask ourselves is to what extent are “we are inextricably immersed in the thought-forms of our culture” so that we feel compelled to use its language and words without studying the history of those words?
Dan, I would be interested to see if you can find any scholars who define values as “enduring non-subjective moral truth.” Thank you for some interesting insights.
Fred
Fred,
I don't think the problem admits of so easy a solution.
Words are conventional signs. What happens if most of the people speaking the language adopt a new convention? Do we begin a heroic but doomed battle to reclaim such words as gay and nice, or do we do what thinking people have always had to do: distinguish, make clear in what sense a word is used?
I believe in advocating without stridency what can be defended as better usage, but what is achieved by attributing to people's statements secret meanings that they don't actually intend?
In fact, in the very example you give, all the rhetorical force of Burkes' choice of title comes from the fact that most people who speak of family values mean fidelity, hard work, sacrifice, monogamy, heterosexuality, etc. Burkes uses the title precisely because for her readers and the reading public this is what the term means. She means to be provocative by stealing the title. By your argument, we would have to abandon "virtue" if she decides to name her next book that. We will be busy digging up traditional terms which haven't been at one time or another co-opted by evil rhetoricians.
I don't think you can find any word for good that hasn't had paltry and subjective usage. As Josef Pieper points out in his book on love, there is a good reason for this. It is with the same will that we choose our highest and ultimate end and all the little and insignificant means to the end. That's why we love God and baseball.
The terminology of will and goodness has never been easy. Aristotle and Aquinas define the good as "what all seek." It seems replete with subjectivity unless we recognize that with respect to our final good, we don't have a choice. What traditional wisdom means by good or valuable is what is conducive to our final absolute God-determined good. That's where I would prefer to make the distinction: By good or valuable or virtuous or whatever word you choose, you either mean conducive to achieving the end for which you were created, or you mean what you want without reference to any end outside of your act of will.
Well, I hope you enjoy talking about such things as much as I do. Thanks for writing back.
Dan

Are Values Valuable?
Are Values Valuable?
Dear Dan,
Thanks for the email. I agree with you that “many people use 'value' precisely to mean enduring non-subjective moral truth.”
The problem is words must have an objective meaning as CS Lewis said or they become meaningless. For example, the title of Phyllis Burkes’ lesbian book is “Family Values.” If the word doesn’t mean opinion then how can you and your friends use the same word as Burkes.
I suggest the word virtues be used instead of values.
If you want a little chronicle of the word read historian Gertrude Himmelfarb. She said,” It was not until the present century that morality became so thoroughly relativized and subjectified that virtues ceased to be virtues and became “values”...Values as we understand that word, do not have to be virtues; they can be beliefs, opinions, attitudes, feelings, habits, conventions, preferences, prejudices, even idiosyncrasies.”
Fred
Dear Fred:
Thanks for your interesting article. I agreed with just about everything except the major point of departure. Not to be patronizing, but I'm not even sure you mean exactly what you say in the article.
I agree that there is much confusion in language discussing moral questions, but I don't think it's true that everyone who uses these confused terms agrees with the Nietzsche, Adler, Jung, Maslow, Rogers, etc.
Many people use "value" precisely to mean enduring non-subjective moral truth.
Part of what makes our task so daunting is the necessity of doing basic education, i.e. the right signification of words, the rules of logic, etc., before we can discuss more difficult topics like "what is good".
If this education had really been attended to in the past 100 years, rather than being thought babyish and uninteresting, I don't think charlatans like Maslow and Rogers would have gotten to square one.
I certainly agree that the scandals so much noted today were largely hatched in the free thinking era of the sixties when all this pseudo-psychology became so popular with the clergy and religious.
