Republican John McCain continues to cut into Barack Obama’s lead in the polls and now trails the Democrat by just 1.1 percent points in the latest survey by Investor’s Business Daily.

Obama garnered 44.8 percent of the votes compared to 43.7 percent for McCain, with 11.6 percent not sure, in the tracking poll released Thursday by IBD and its polling partner, the TechnoMetrica Institute of Policy and Politics (TIPP).

Wednesday’s tracking poll had McCain trailing by 3.7 points, and an IBD survey just four days earlier had Obama ahead by 7.4 points.

McCain is seeing gains with middle- and working-class voters, and has gone from a 5-point deficit on Oct. 18 to a 9-point lead among Catholic voters.

The latest poll shows McCain in the lead among male voters, Protestants and investors, and holding solid 16-point leads among suburban and rural voters.

According to IBD, polling partner TIPP was the most accurate pollster during the 2004 election season.
