Is Oprah Hurt by Obama?

The L.A. Times blog, Top of the Ticket, has caused an Internet controversy by supposing that talk show guru and unstoppable media force Oprah Winfrey’s support of Sen. Barack Obama has hurt her public image. What do you think?

Oprah is one of the richest women in the media, thanks in part to her daytime talk show, her magazine, and Harpo Productions, which produces shows like Dr. Phil and the upcoming Dr. Oz show. Her wealth is only eclipsed by her popularity -- since 1986 when her show first aired, Oprah has raised an army of fans who were drawn to the host’s how-to messages of spiritual fulfillment and in 1999, only Mother Teresa was polled to be more admired and respected.

The Times’ Andrew Malcom points out that 14 months ago, a Gallup/USA Today poll found 74% of Americans had a favorable view of the TV personality, and following her May 1 endorsement of Obama on the Larry King Show, her popularity had fallen and continues to fall. In August of last year, a CBS poll recorded her “favorable rating” at 61%, a drop of 13 points.

More numbers follow that proved his point. Ten days after the Rev. Jeremiah Wright controversy, her favorable rating dropped to 55%, and then the recent AOL TV popularity survey of 1.35 million Americans chose Ellen DeGeneres over Oprah as their favorite daytime TV host (46% to 19%, respectively).

Conclusion: Endorsing a candidate can hurt your celebrity status. L.A. Times online readers went crazy, causing the original post to be appended today. Many defended Oprah’s freedom of speech (“Oprah had the guts to go out on the limb because the other two candidates would be a disaster for this country and she knows it.”), but many watch her show solely for its apolitical message (“But once she came out backing Obama I have refused to watch any of her shows, even the one on Sundays”). [LA Times]

What do you think about the Oprah/Obama connection? Does she have a responsibility to speak out on politics? Should fans allow her politics to taint their opinion of her? related

And I am not a fan of Oprah Winfrey, rarely watch her show but catch Ellen any chance I get. Still, I believe that Oprah, as all of us, has the right to choose her candidate. The fact that she is influential and can walk out on stage to endorse her choice is the difference between her and I. I will walk into the polls in November and silently choose mine. But my endorsement of my choice is just as strong as hers. related

However, we also have the freedom to turn off her TV show and stop our magazine subscriptions. Oprah has built her fortune largely on empowering women, yet, when the first viable female presidential candidate emerged, she turned her back. What sealed the deal for me is that Oprah attends and supports the same racist church as Obama. I have no patience for that kind of talk, and neither should Oprah or Obama. related [http://community.comcast.net/comcastportal/blog/article?blog.id=PopcastBlog&message.id=2174&jump=true#M2174]
